A Guide to Buying the Best Ebook Reader for You

by TravisVS on August 18, 2009

Trying to find the best ebook reader for you can be hard in a growing market. There used to be very few choices, but as the readers became more popular, more and more companies have been developing their own devices. You can get budget models or models that cost as much as a small library of paper books. But choosing the one that will suit you is about getting the one that meets your needs, not just buying the most expensive one available. So how do you get the best one for you?

Step one, as with buying most things, is to set a budget. Before you even consider an ebook reader, you need to know that you will be spending a minimum of a couple hundred dollars before you even buy a book. You can find cheaper readers for around that much which won’t come with many features or extras. But if you’re just looking for casual reading, they may suit you fine. If you demand only the best, you can spend upwards of $1,000 on some very fancy models. But that could mean you get a lot of things you don’t really need and no one wants to waste their money.

The most crucial step when buying an ebook reader is to buy the one that meets all your needs. Don’t compromise if you don’t have to. You don’t want to buy a cheap reader only to find out that the library of books it offers doesn’t contain your favorite author or that it doesn’t support the file type of the ebooks you already own. If a touch screen is vital to you, perhaps you won’t have a problem dropping $1,000 on the Flepia. If the largest library is what matters, Amazon’s 250,000 books should give you plenty to choose from. And of course every model comes with a plethora of accessories you can buy as well.

It is always wise to never buy something without first seeing it in person. With a reader you want to do this particularly because it is something you may be holding for long periods of time. These devices come in many sizes and weights and dimensions, so it is important to find one you are comfortable holding. While the huge screen of the Kindle DX may appeal to you, be sure that it is not something that you will find difficult to hold for a while. So even if you find an amazing price online, visit a store so you can handle the device and be sure before you buy.

If you are completely new to the technology, it can be a bit daunting to choose from the wide array of readers that are currently available. And with more sure to come, the decision will not get any easier if you wait. Just use common sense and trust your instincts and you will certainly be fine. And always remember that the most expensive ebook reader is not always the best ebook reader for you.
