The Amazon Kindle Drops Price, Goes Global
Earlier this week, Amazon had some exciting news to announce to ebook reading enthusiasts not just in the country but all over the world.
First, the 6-inch Kindle is now easier on the pocket at its new price tag of $259. It can be recalled that only last July 2009, the 2nd generation Kindle already dropped in price to $299 following the launch of the Amazon Kindle DX. By further slashing down its price to $259, Amazon is making the Kindle more accessible to more consumers – and not just to those who couldn’t afford the close – to three hundred dollar cost, but also to those who believed that the Kindle could be more reasonably priced.
Then, in a move that’s highly anticipated by Kindle fans in other parts of the world, Amazon also unveiled its latest addition to the Kindle family: the Kindle with U.S. and International Wireless technology. For US residents who buy this Kindle, this means that they can now do wireless download outside the country. The official communication from Amazon informs us that,
“With this new Kindle, you can receive your books, newspapers, and magazines wirelessly while at home or abroad in over 100 countries. Whether you’re in New York, Paris, São Paulo, Mumbai, Beijing, Tokyo, or Sydney, you can think of a book and be reading it in less than 60 seconds.”
Equally significant with this latest release is the fact that Amazon now ships the Kindle to consumers living in other countries. The Amazon Kindle with U.S. and International Wireless is priced at $279, and other than the expanded coverage of the wireless technology, comes with all other features as the 2nd generation Kindle including:
• Its very compact size: as thin as most magazines and weighs less than most paperbacks;
• Capacity to hold as many as 1,500 books;
• E-ink screen that reads like real paper, glare-free even in bright sunlight;
• Long battery life that lets you read up to two weeks without needing to recharge;
• 3G wireless technology that doesn’t require any Wi-Fi hotspot, software installation, or syncing;
• Access to over 350,000 books including the latest New York Times bestsellers from the U.S. Kindle Store.
The $259 Kindle with U.S. Wireless is now available for immediate delivery, while the $279 Kindle with International Wireless can be pre-ordered today. Orders are prioritized on a first-come, first-served basis and shipping starts on October 19, 2009. Thanks for pointing that out. To be honest, I didn’t realize we had the “time of post” option off. Oops. We’ll get that fixed. Thanks.
